Home Game: An Accidental Guide to Fatherhood is an interesting book primarily because it's the male counterpart of being a parent, and we get to look at what goes on in a man's mind when he becomes a father for the first time, and the second, and the third. It's a funny and endearing new work by New York Times best-selling author Michael Lewis.

Michael Lewis can be described as typical; freaking out at the thought of being a father, yet at the same time expecting to feel wonderfully different because of his baby. What's hilarious about Home Game is that it all started as Michael Lewis' recounts about how he became a dad to his three children right after their birth. It's amazing to look at what goes on in a man's mind when he goes crazy about fatherhood and what he tries to do to stay sane above all.

People usually hear and read about motherhood and how it's a very personal, special, and unique relationship, but reading about fatherhood, and a father's very personal, often funny recounts about his experiences is very refreshing. Finally we get to see that men are not that composed as we thought, and underneath their calm and collected composition, they're also a wreck sometimes.

But what I love the most about Home Game is that Michael Lewis tells it all. He's not embarrassed, doesn't feel intruded by his very recollections, and his wife is okay with everything he wrote. For what it's worth, Home Game: An Accidental Guide to Fatherhood by Michael Lewis is really worth your time, and worth your laughs. It's fun, refreshing, and most importantly, it's true.

"The Expectant Father" was the first book I purchased when I found out I was going to be a new dad. Written by two magazine and newspaper contributors, Armin A. Brott and Jennifer Ash, the book lays down a solid foundation for clueless dads-to-be looking to grasp the fundamentals of their new situation.

The authors do a really great job of covering basic pregnancy information from the man's point of view. The book is broken down by months; each month's chapter will have a short section on the things you, your baby and your partner may all be going through. In addition to that there will be a subject high lighted in that chapter. Topics that are covered are: paying for the birth, child and college, communication, telling the world, work and family changes, the birth and many others.

The book is not written by medical professionals which gives the book a very familiar and conversational feel. You get the feeling that it's more like one of your buddies talking to you than a biology text book. The book isn't devoid of valuable medical input though. The authors site and incorporate tons of information from doctors, midwives, psychologists and others. This combined with the relatively short 198 pages makes it an easy read.

One thing that I found distracting was that the book is organized by months while everything in pregnancy is calculated by weeks. Yeah the math isn't hard, but sometimes big things can happen from week to week. Also you get a lot of information thrown at you that may not apply right away. For example; the authors delve deep into college funds in the second month's chapter. This wave of information sometimes was too much to completely absorb and I find myself often re-reading chapters when the month actually arrives.

In conclusion, "The Expectant Father" is a great book if you just found out you are going to be a new dad. It gives you a good base to start off with, but will not be the only baby book you need. I recommend combining this book with a woman's preganancy week-by-week book (that I am sure your partner has already) to get a better picture of the entire pregnancy. All in all this book is worth the money and does a fantastic job of introducing you to the wide world of pregnancy.

Farce Extraordinaire - An Old-Time Touch of Pulp Men's Adventure!

At the same time that Radio Soap Dramas were very popular, there were also pulp fiction magazines and novels. Fat Cowboy by Rod Miller reminded me of these books, published on cheaper paper with drawings highlighting the storyline for, in this case, "men's adventure!" For surely Fat Cowboy has the guns and warriors plus that warped sense of humor that keeps the story moving forward to share the "temptation, corruption, and redemption" of con men and criminals.

For Miller takes readers deep into the jungles of Peru for his wild, fantastic story. First, let me highlight that Fat Cowboy is indeed a con, a hustler-"a true believer in the principles of unregulated free enterprise, the accumulation of private wealth, the subservience of labor to capital, the ascendancy of the individual over the collective and natural selection." (p. 15) or making money through any way and every way that will bring fame and fortune...why, he's even rescued the wife of the vice-president (of the Republican party) when she was "kidnapped" and discovered in South America. He, of course, successfully brought her back, even if she didn't want to come and later escaped again!

Aristito Fur is the reason for his safari. This rare, ermine-like animal is known to have the softest fur and because and the income for about 4000 square feet of this fur would be a $4Billion annual gross. Obviously Fat Cowboy saw the potential and decided to kidnap and breed these animals. Only issue, the animals are part of a Peruvian tribal religious activity, somehow involving a virgin, so negotiations must be extremely sensitive... And, oh yes, one other important issue is that Fat Cowboy has no plans to raise the aristito himself! So he "ensures" that an internationally acclaimed biologist, Dr. Destri O'Riordan, accepts the challenge of ensuring that these animals do not become extinct, which could actually occur, according to the latest research Fat Cowboy has been able to receive.

Just a small band of men, plus Dr. O'Riordan travel to Peru, which Fat Cowboy has a contact who knows the chief of the Peruvian tribe, Lydia Pinkham (I'll let you wonder how and why the chief took this name for his own!). But they were not the only ones who were on their way to Peru.

For Ygal Ben Wa, a Mossad, a totally displaced and misunderstood warrior, had been hired by ConPet, to ensure they could build a pipeline across the country! Their target was Zamora and his friendly group of soldiers of fortune and mercenaries known as the Fourth of September Brigade who fought against anybody, anybody with white skin! Interestingly, Zamora's band of men had visited Lydia Pinkham just before Fat Cowboy's group arrived. They were the first to enjoy Lydia's well-known soup that was based upon cooking one human head, along with many herbs and hallucinogenic drugs!

In a sport where your opponent is there to break you to their will, being tough is a requirement that is more than just physical or mental. It's everything. The moves are all the same, you're matched by weight class, and everyone is watching the two of you. In the book, Wrestling Tough, author Mike Chapman discusses the very essence of the sport of wrestling and while giving readers a glimpse into the toolbox of every great wrestler. The fundamentals to wrestling tough start with simply choosing to wrestle. Both Abraham Lincoln and George Washington were known as wrestlers of considerable skills. The idea to choose to wrestle is a tough one, but many educators promote the sport as an ideal way to instill discipline and values that will allow people to succeed in life. While you can choose to play some of the more popular sports like basketball, baseball and football, wrestling demands something of you at every practice or event. Every time a person wrestles they can expect to be pushed to their limits and they can expect to want to quit, but wrestling demands that you want to win more.

Understand toughness and building confidence are foundational attributes that any wrestler has to push themselves to obtain. The confidence built through physical preparation cannot be given to you with a game plan executed in one day, but is a day-to-day plan that will allow you to know that no one could have possibly trained harder.

His focus and dedications are that of which legend was born. This same intensity was passed down to what is known as "Gable's Boys" in the wrestling world, as he never quite picked what he would call the best wrestlers so much as the wrestlers that matched his style. Gable taught focus and determination to all of his athletes through preparation. This however requires one thing from the participants, commitment and dedication to their goals. This was something that many coaches have come to understand through watching successful athletes, but with wrestlers this can be spoon fed one murderous second at a time. Every takedown is that one that wins the match, every drill is that one point or a dire situation the pin you need to win. These little goals lead to bigger goals: state titles; national titles; world championships; and the Olympics. While wrestling tough it is however important that you have to want it before every practice before you can actually put in the level of intensity to get that far.

Bear Bryant was known as one of the greatest coaches of all time in college football, winning 6 national titles. He also held the sport of wrestling in high esteem, requiring every player to participate in wrestling during their spring training, to prepare them both physically and mentally. When it comes to preparation, wrestling drives a person to the outer limits of themselves and face to face with giving up or pushing onward against a person.

Will, the will to win and to want to win has to be ingrained in a wrestlers mind. The Brands brothers were known to "will" themselves toward their goals, by writing out affirmations and declaring what their futures held. Several great wrestlers had this same belief that it was all a matter of wanting it so bad that you brainwashed yourself, by affirming it again and again. This is the mindset of a wrestler, many great wrestlers like Bill Koll and Dan Gable were known for their intensity and brainwashed mentality that seemed to put them in another place.

Talent is good but giving that something extra, is important especially when your opponent is likely working just as long as you are in the off season and wants it just as bad. Talent without hard work is going to leave you run down and exhausted to an opponent who committed to hard work and willing to outwork you. Hard work leads to the ability to rise to the occasion and bring a new level of intensity to competition and their opponents. Also with that added effort a wrestler who has worked hard will have built the mental toughness that can be developed, and constantly improved upon. Those improvements can touch onto other abilities and attributes that will only make for a better, more talented wrestler.

The ability to pay the price for victory is paramount. John Smith and Dan Gable neither committed to relationships while in search for wrestling excellence. To not hang out with friends or to just be so consumed with victory can weight a lot onto an athlete, and with wrestling the mental gas tank will be challenged. In practice a wrestler has to be willing to take themselves to a higher level where they can push aside all the setbacks and the life that happens. After pushing the thoughts aside then they must be ready to be pounded into the mat again and again or fight off an opponent who is there ready to drive you into the mat. Wrestling is paying the price, and when you have paid that price everything else in life is easy.

Wrestling tough is a mindset, a winning mindset. If you are looking for a magic bullet or the latest self-help craze you will not find it.
